Coder Sprint, or how to have a healthy DrupalCon
One thing I realized in DC is that I am not the only geek around concerned about my health; I am vegetarian, exercise every day, run 3 to 4 times a week and overall try to find balance in my life. I love working in the Web industry, however for me and almost everybody else I know working in the same field it means having to spend a huge amount of time sitting in front of a computer (and, for most of my friends, drinking a lot of beer too).
The latest DrupalCon had its King of Parties in charge of making sure geeks would see some action along the week. Although I enjoy sharing a couple drinks from time to time with other Drupalers, I must say that I am no more the geek I used to be; I don't drink as often as before and when I do, I usually don't need much before hitting the bed. On the plus side, I get much more done in the morning while others are still sleeping they beer off.
So, for all the Drupalers out there that are willing to socialize outside of the bars and wish to stay in shape through the DrupalCon, I propose the "Coder Sprint" group; meeting in the morning for an early run, yoga session, or whatever you want to practice, followed by a healthy breakfast before we all hit the sessions. We'll sort out the logistic later on, but from what I have heard it should be easy to find areas around the venue to exercise.
Anybody else interested in having a healthy DrupalCon in Paris? If so, I'll post this information on the DrupalCon website as soon as it is up.

Submitted by Robert Douglass (not verified) on Mon, 2009-03-16 15:34.I was on the road for two weeks for Drupalcon. I managed to do two workouts in the hotel gym. Better than nothing, but I still came home a Kg heavier and with muscles like spaghetti. It'd be great to have organized sports of some kind that I could take part in. Then I wouldn't have to take time off from Drupal and the conference to look after my health. Great idea!

I wasn't in DC but hopefully I'll make it to Paris.
I'll be mid-preparation for a marathon, so I'll be doing plenty of running - hopefully.
Closer to the event, we'll see about organising some group runs - maybe even a race?

Submitted by elv (not verified) on Tue, 2009-03-17 01:25.I'm not an early riser and can't resist following fellow drupalers in too many bars, so I doubt I'll be able to wake up earlier than absolutely necessary :) But it's still a great idea.
There is a park just in front of the venue that may fit for short runs and probably yoga on the grass.
I'll try to get more information, as I believe there is also a gymnasium (a stadium actually) at the venue itself.
For more serious runs there are two woods at the east and west borders of Paris. You'll see a lot of people running or cycling there.

Submitted by Gregor Heller (not verified) on Tue, 2009-03-17 02:42.At the OSCMS in Vancouver in 2006 Sarah Pullman organized and lead a "Yoga For Geeks" session. She also did the same at the Penguin Day in Seattle in 2006. The sessions were held during the lunch hour, and were a fantastic way to "chill out" and get some blood flowing.
I think it would be a good idea for there to be an open room at drupalcons for meditation, yoga, nap time, as well as organized outdoor/excercise/health activity.
I drank way too much beer, and ate way too much "bad" food at this drupalcon (and probably ever one before it too).
If i make it to Paris, the wine and food will be hard to resist, so a "health" regimen would be welcome.

I am not a marathon runner but I do go the gym thrice a week and I would love some exercise. I am not as hot as sarahfelicity nor i am a yoga teacher either but if there is noone else to do it, I did learn stretching quite some so if all we want is stretching I can do something.

You will have extra energy to keep yourself from being burned out after years of computer work. This will definitely give you an edge and help you stand out amongst your peers.

Maybe there could be morning runs before the first sessions? Or other planned active activities?
